Embracing Excellence and Growth at the AP Annual Conference 2023

As part of the continuous improvement process of the Network and to provide personalized experiences to our students, part of the High School Academic team attended the AP Annual Conference 2023, which took place in Seattle, Washington.

College Board is a mission-driven not-for-profit organization that connects students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 1900, the College Board was created to expand access to higher education. Today, the membership association comprises over 6,000 of the world’s leading educational institutions and is dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in education. Each year, College Board helps more than seven million students prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success—including the SAT, the Advanced Placement (AP) Program, and BigFuture. The organization also serves the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators, and schools. (CB home page).

At the AP Annual Conference 2023, we participated in plenary sessions, workshops linked to our model's pillars, and networking. We discovered a community of leaders and teachers committed to developing academic competencies and the social-emotional and leadership skills that our world needs so much and that we foster through our pedagogical and curricular model.

We had meetings with the commercial side (Paul Sanders, Executive Director, Market Management), as well as with AP counselors (Lacey Bonner and Martha Morris, Directors, Counselor Community Engagement); we participated in the Counselor Focus Group, sharing questions, feedback, and insights with counselor colleagues and the College Board Counselor Community Engagement Team.

These insights provided valuable input about college advising, resources, and AP student support.

We also met teachers with successful practices to support their students in understanding and passing the exams.

AP Capstone program

We also deepen into the AP Capstone program, which, according to admissions departments of international universities, provides tools for university entrance by improving young people’s specific skills:

  • Critical thinking, communication, and research skills for preparing university entrance essays.
  • Confidence, enthusiasm, and experience when talking to college interviewers about their academic projects.
  • Creativity, quality, and discernment to build and present argument-based evidence of learning, research methodology, and collaborative work.

We are working on a proposal that allows our students access to Advanced Placement subjects and the Capstone program, according to their context, skills, and interests, so that their study, approval, and certification process is enjoyable, successful, and contributes to the achievement of our graduate profile competencies.

We invite you to build a community with the educational centers of the Semper Altius Schools’ Network and Prepa Anáhuac Network within the College Board and attend the courses and workshops this institution offers. We look forward to meeting you at the upcoming AP Annual Conference, which will take place in Las Vegas from July 24th to 27th, 2024.
